The S.F.M.C., founded in 1931 (association of public utility), has many objectives :

 

* the attribution of prizes and gifts to junior technicians and engineers, junior researchers, authors of works
of high scientific value in the domains of metrology of time and frequencies and microtechnics.

* the publication of the French Annals of microtechnics and chronometry which content scientific articles,
papers from various public meetings, summaries of the prizes distributed, works of high school students
and the life of the association.

* public conferences over high-tech subjects involving real-life applications.

* the European Time and Frequency Forum, created in 1987 by both the S.F.M.C. and the Swiss Foundation
for Research in Microtechnics (F.S.R.M., in Neuchâtel, Switzerland), which was held alternatively in Besançon
and Neuchâtel until 1992. Since then it was also hosted by other european countries. Since 1999, it has been joint
twice to the International Frequency Control Symposium, the most important american forum in this domain.

* a collaboration with the Observatory of Besançon for the diffusion of astronomy and the development
of it's cultural heritage.
